The American's Practical Guide to Living in the Philippines by L.W. Bishop

Not a Fantasy. Not a Sales Pitch.
Just the Truth.

Most books about moving abroad sell you a dream. This one prepares you for a life.

Book Cover

The Philippines offers something most Americans never expected to find — an extraordinary quality of life at a fraction of the cost back home. But the dream and the reality are two different things. Visas, banking, healthcare, housing, scams, typhoons, culture shock, and the emotional weight of leaving everything behind — none of it shows up in the YouTube videos.

"Written by an American who was lucky to survive the first year with his hasty, poorly planned move — and who decided the most useful thing he could do was write it all down."

Covers everything from visa options (including the Veterans Courtesy SRRV most guides don't mention), real cost-of-living breakdowns, city-by-city location guides, banking, U.S. tax obligations, healthcare, dating and marriage, safety, natural disasters, Filipino culture, and how to build a sustainable life that actually lasts.

Texas-born. Air Force veteran. Retired travel nurse. Accidental expat.

🇺🇸 U.S. Air Force Veteran 🏥 Retired Travel Nurse 🌏 Philippines Expat ✈️ World Traveler

L.W. Bishop spent the first half of his life chasing two dreams — seeing the world and becoming a nurse. After high school in Texas, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and spent two years stationed in Germany in the early 1990s, deploying during Operation Desert Storm and using every opportunity to explore the countries around him.

Back in the States, he put himself through nursing school the hard way — two years working as a welder to fund his education. He graduated in 1996 and built a nursing career that would span nearly three decades, eventually taking him across the country as a travel nurse before finishing in Alaska.

It was there that a chance encounter led him to a Filipino dating site, a woman who would change everything, and a chain of events that ended with him retiring, selling everything he owned, and moving to the Philippines in the span of three months.

He has been living there ever since — and he has never looked back. The American's Practical Guide to Living in the Philippines is the guide he wishes he'd had before he made his own impulsive, poorly planned, extraordinarily lucky move.
